Description
Learning outcomes

Student is familiar with the most important subject-specific scholarly information sources and has basic skills in systematic information retrieval. Student is able to manage reference process with RefWorks software. Student has knowledge about the process of scientific publishing and UEF publishing and data policy.

Student understands the basic concepts of bibliometrics (e.g. citations, h-index, impact factor) and can critically use bibliometric methods for selecting a publishing channel and for assessing research impact. Student has ability for creating a data management plan and is aware of the principles of managing research data.

Student has online tools for increasing research visibility and academic networking. Student can critically assess research impact in social media with altmetric applications.

Content

The course consists of seven modules: 1) the basics of information retrieval, 2) discipline-specific information retrieval, 3) reference management, 4) publishing, 5) research impact assessment and bibliometrics, 6) research data, 7) researcher visibility, networking and altmetrics. Student selects at least four modules.

Modules:

1. The basics of information retrieval (online)

Learning outcomes of the module: Student can analyze his/her research theme in the concept of information retrieval, structure research topic to search terms, formulate search queries and conduct searches in selected databases.

Module content: Selection and formulation of search terms. Search techniques: truncation of search terms (use of wildcard characters), phrases, proximity of search terms, combination of search terms with operators. Basic use of databases: search forms, limiting and modifying searches.

2. Discipline-specific information retrieval (includes contact teaching)

Learning outcomes of the module: Student is familiar with the most important scientific databases of his/her discipline. Student can conduct systematic information searches and stay updated in his/her discipline.

Module content: Information retrieval as a part of the research process. Information retrieval from discipline-specific databases. Assessment of search results. How to set up current information alerting.

3. Reference management (includes contact teaching)

Learning outcomes of the module: Student can use RefWorks 3 for creating references and bibliographies.

Module content: Creation of a user account. Transfer of a user account from RefWorks 2 to RefWorks 3. Saving of references. Maintenance of saved references (e.g. searching, editing, utilizing folders, removal of duplicates). Reference styles. Addition of references to texts and creation of bibliographies.

4. Publishing (online)

Learning outcomes of the module: Student knows the principles of scientific publication process and is familiar with the doctoral thesis publishing practices at UEF. Student can apply UEF publishing policy in his/her work and is familiar with the publishing alternatives (e.g. open access). Student has perception of the evaluation of the scientific publishing channels.

Module content: The basics of scientific publishing and publication process of a doctoral thesis at UEF. UEF publishing policy. Tools for assessment of scientific publishing channels.

5. Assessment of research impact and bibliometrics (online)

Learning outcomes of the module: Student understands the bibliometric terminology and research evaluation based on scientific publications. Student can critically exploit bibliometric methods (e.g. citations, h-index, impact factor) for selecting an appropriate publishing channel and evaluating the research impact. Student can assess research activity and impact with SciVal program.

Module content: Basic concepts of bibliometrics, methods and indicators. Usefulness of bibliometrics at different disciplines. Tools for bibliometric assessment: SoleCris, Publication Forum, Juuli, Journal Citation Reports, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, Publish or Perish, SciVal, University rankings.

6. Research data (online)

Learning outcomes of the module: Student has ability for creating a data management plan according to the guidelines of the funder and UEF. Student is familiar with the principles of research data management (e.g. UEF data policy, licenses) and is aware of national and international research data repositories.

Module content: Creation of data management plan with DMPTuuli-tool. UEF data policy. Basics of licenses. Research data repositories.

7. Researcher visibility, networking and altmetrics (online)

Learning outcomes of the module: Student understands the significance of research visibility from the perspective of the researcher, science community and society. Student is familiar with common social networking sites for academics and can exploit them for networking and increasing researcher visibility. Student can create and maintain digital researcher ID. Student can follow his/her research visibility and impact online and in social media with altmetric tools.

Module content: The significance of research and researcher visibility. Social networking sites for researchers (e.g. ResearchGate, Academia.edu). Researcher ID (ORCID). Altmetric tools for assessing web-based research visibility and impact.

Teaching methods

The course consists of seven modules, from which student optionally selects at least four modules (Please, enroll yourself to at least four modules in WebOodi). Supervised studying of all the modules is not necessary but recommended if the student finds his/her knowledge of the module contents inadequate. Modules 1, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are conducted online. Flipped classroom teaching method is applied to the modules 3 and 6. Modules 2 and 3 contain contact teaching (classroom/Skype for Business/Adobe Connect). The course is possible to conduct online by the module selections.

Contact teaching: Reference management 3 h, discipline-specific information retrieval 3 h. If you want to register to these modules, please select one contact teaching session / module.

Study materials

Study material is freely available online: https://blogs.uef.fi/ueflibrarypostgrad/

Study material is in English.

You will get a link and enrolment key to Moodle study platform after the teacher has accepted your registration in WebOodi. You need to complete the compulsory study assignments in Moodle.
