Description
Learning outcomes 

By the end of the study module, students will have an understanding of local, rural and urban development and governance, the evolution of the settlement systems, resources and industrial metabolism in flux, the emergence of the industrial society and its transformation to information society and bioenergy in the European North.

 
Content 

The study module gives fresh and topical insights into recent changes in local and regional development issues in the European North. Lectures focus on evolution of the economic, settlement and governance systems, the local impacts of past and recent socio-economic restructuring, the industry cycles and resource dependence, the advance of local regional and state politics, and the role of local initiatives in communities. The latest research findings and theories will be presented. The course will enhance students' knowledge base concerning the local, rural and trans-boundary development in Fennoscandia. A seminar gives an insight to current research in the field.

Lectures (20 h) and supplementary reading materials. 5113107 Research seminar (3 h) for researchers in the field of rural studies.

Evaluation criteria 

Students must prove that they have an understanding of local, rural and urban development and governance, the evolution of the settlement systems, the emergence of the industrial society and its transformation to information society in the European North by participating in a research seminar to be evaluated 0-5. Active attendance at lectures is required.
