Description
Learning outcomes

Student learns to analyse data and to interpret the results of commonly used statistical methods including different regression methods. The 5-credit course gives sufficient background knowledge for intermediate courses in statistics and for data science.

Content

Multivariate distribution, estimation, hypothesis testing (independence test, Mann-Whitney test, Wilcoxon test), introduction to regression methods (regression analysis, 1- and 2-way analysis of variance, logistic regression). On the 3 cr course we do not study multivariate distributions.

Modes of study

5-credit course: Self-study based on the web-material (109 h), starting lectures (6 h), contact teaching (16 h), lecture exam (4 h).

3-credit course: Self-study based on the web-material (59 h), starting lectures (6 h), contact teaching (12 h), lecture exam (4 h).

Course can be alternatively passed by taking an exam based on the course material in a general examination.

Teaching methods

Student prepares for the weekly tutorials by (1) reading given material and watching videos at moodle, (2) doing a related weekly exam and (3) starting the weekly exercises. In tutorials there is also possibility to make some questions on weekly topics. The student (4) returns the weekly exercise report to moodle and (5) after the submission deadline, reads the correct answers and self-evaluated his/her own report. Overall, the students need approximately 10 hours per week for the course, in addition to the 2 hour contact sessions

Study materials

Handout and material in Moodle

Evaluation criteria

Grade 0-5. The grade is based either (1) on a weighted mean of weekly exercises, weekly exams and written exam or (2) on the written exam only so that the grade is the better one out of these two.

Prerequisites

Introduction to statistics

Time

Annually in the spring semester. Exams will be arranged throughout the year

Offering data

Course is open to anyone. No restrictions in the number of participants. The tutorial groups can be selected freely, even though they are named according to the subjects where this course is mandatory. Useful also for PhD students who need statistical methods in their research.
