Description
Learning outcomes 

Students will become familiarised to the formation and transformation of borders in Europe and within the so-called European neighbourhood. In particular, students are introduced to the conceptual and theoretical underpinnings of current research on the constitution of borders and policies of cross-border co-operation. The objective is to learn to recognise the variety of theoretical approaches and to understand their contested nature and links to hidden political agendas. Participation in the seminar provides students training in research methods and communication skills.

 
Content 

By the end of this course, students will understand the construction and trans-formation of European borders, including Russia and the former-Soviet space. Special attention is paid to the changing political language and spatial imaginaries in particular in the context of European integration and the external relations of the EU. The main themes of the lecture course are: introduction to formation and transformation of borders in Europe and within the European neighbourhood; key concepts and theoretical frameworks of the study of the construction and transformation of borders; changing significance of borders in the context of European integration; politics of cross-border co-operation and EU external relations.

 
Modes of study 

The course comprises lectures (20h) and an examination, as well as a seminar (8h) and final paper.

Evaluation criteria 

0-5. Students must prove that they have achieved the required level of knowledge for the lectures and assigned texts by writing an examination, to be evaluated 0-5. Additionally, students must prove that they understand the construction and trans-formation of European border by presenting orally and submitting a research essay on a related issue to be evaluated 0-5. Active attendance at lectures is required.
