Learning outcomes 

The student obtains good understanding of the physical principles in nuclear medicine, imaging principles, instrumentation, quality control and radiation protection.


Basics of atomic and nuclear physics, Radioisotopes, pharmaceuticals and their production. Interaction of radiation with matter, radiation detection, nuclear counting statistics. Diagnostic imaging. Gamma camera. Clinical studies. SPECT- and PET-tomography. Quality control. Radiation doses.

Modes of study 

Written exam, 40% of the exercises passed, 2 x tutorials in KYS and accepted short report from KYS tutorial. Workgroup presentation at the end of the course.

SR Cherry, JA Sorenson, ME Phelps: Physics in Nuclear medicine, 3rd Edition, Saunders 2003. Material given during lectures.
