Learning outcomes 

The student can use Finnish in frequently occurring everyday situations and tasks. They can express wishes and needs and perform simple tasks by phone. The student is familiar with expressions of politeness, and can follow instructions in Finnish. The student can describe past events in detail. He or she understands the main points of simple media content and can find information from texts written in a standard and predictable form. The student can write short texts and perform in routine communicative situations in which information is exchanged on familiar topics. The student is aware of the extent of their language skills. They can verbally influence their environment and matters that concern them. The student is familiar with the basic structures of Finnish culture and society.

Modes of study 

Participating in instruction and completing course assignments and exercises. The minimum attendance requirement for contact teaching is 50%.

Attendance of the first session is required to secure a place on the course. Course-specific, practical arrangements are agreed during the first session.

In order to complete the course and to be eligible for the course exam (if there is one), the student needs to meet the attendance requirement and successfully complete all course assignments within the set deadlines.

If the student has exceeded the maximum number of absences or has failed to submit course assignments in the set deadlines, the course enrolment is terminated. In this case the student cannot take part in the course exam or retake exam, but the course needs to be retaken in its entirety.

Lectures, spoken and written pair and group exercises and independent studies, for example.
You should reserve 108 hours of total working time for the course. The maximum number of contact teaching hours is 48, some of which may be arranged in another manner agreed by the teacher and class.

Evaluation criteria 

Evaluation: 5–0.
Active participation in group instruction (at least 50% attendance), completing course assignments, final exam and possible midterm exam. The course grade (5-0) is based on both continuous evaluation and course assignment and exam grades. The minimum score required to pass the final exam is 65% of the maximum total score.

If a student gets a fail grade, he has the right to a retake exam.



Course Finnish 1 completed with approval or equivalent skills, Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) skill level A1.3.
