Learning outcomes

Understanding the role and cycling of water in forest and forest soil in catchment scale, and the possibilities to impact forest production and other ecosystem services through water management.

Properties of water, the hydrological processes in forest soil and forested catchments. The impact of hydrology on soil properties and processes. Hydrology and site productivity. Water management, soil drainage and site preparation. Water protection and nutrient exports from forested catchments. Complementary knowledge: modeling the water cycle. Special knowledge: Different simulation programs.

Modes of study

Lectures (18 h), literature, examination (3513024A, 3 cp). Practicals (20 h) (3513024B, 3 cp). It is possible to complete lectures and literature only, or both parts.

Teaching methods

Update 9.11.2020:

The course will be organized as a distance learning during spring semester 2021.

Evaluation criteria

Associate Professor in Forest Ecosystem Modelling and Professor in Forest Soil Science.

Site factors, Forest soils or corresponding studies.

Next course in spring 2021 and on alternate study years with courses Nutrient Dynamics of Forest Ecosystems (3513123) and Carbon Dynamics of Forest Soils (3513125).

Further information

The course is given in Finnish, but if necessary, in English.

The number of participants for the exercises 3513024B, 3 op may be limited due to number of computers available in the IT room. M.Sc. students of the School of Forest Sciences are prioritized.

Letter (J, K) in front of the name of the course/exam indicates the campus on which teaching or exam takes place: J = Joensuu, K = Kuopio.
