Learning outcomes 

Upon a successful completion of this course, the students are expected to know the role and objectives of adaptive co-management in international forest governance, to understand theoretical starting points of participatory and collaborative management, and to be able to apply relevant participatory methodologies for their work. 


Adaptive co-management as a means of international forest governance. Social learning. Basic concepts of co-management in natural resource management and planning, and organisations. Social and community forestry: tailoring forest management to fit local needs. Participative methodologies. Planning a participatory project. Role of external organisations in co-management and adaptation to new circumstances.

Modes of study 

Lectures and exercises (32 h), participatory project, literature, exam.
