Description
Learning outcomes

The student understands the basic ideas of statistical analysis and inference, and is able to use the most simple analysis methods. The students has the basic knowledge to learn more advanced methods of statistics and data science.

Content

Basics of probability. Sampling distributions. Introduction to estimation and hypothesis testing. Inference on population mean and proportion. Analysis of two-way tables. Introduction to regression methods (Regression analysis, analysis of variance, logistic regression and mixed-effect models)

Modes of study

Self-study based on the web-material (113 h), lectures (2 h), contact teaching (16 h), lecture exam (4 h). Alternatively, course can be passed by taking an exam based on the course material in a general examination

Teaching methods

Student prepares for the weekly tutorials by (1) reading given material and watching videos at moodle, (2) doing a related weekly exam and (3) starting the weekly exercises. In tutorials there is also possibility to make some questions on weekly topics. The student (4) returns the weekly exercise report to moodle and, (5) after the submission deadline, reads the correct answers and self-evaluated his/her own report. Overall, the students need approximately 10 hours per week for the course, in addition to the 2 hour contact sessions.

Study materials

Lecture notes and other material available in Moodle.

Textbook: Moore, McCabe and Craig (2012): Introduction to the practice of statistics, 7th edition. Selected parts of chapters 4-15.

Evaluation criteria

Grade 0-5. The grade is based either (1) on a weighted mean of weekly exercises, weekly exams and written exam or (2) on the written exam only, so that the grade is the better one out of these two.

Prerequisites

Basics of descriptive statistics and sampling. Students without these knowledge should read e.g. the first part of the textbook (Part 1 “Looking at data”, chapters 1-3).

Time

Fall semester. Exams will be arranged throughout the year

Offering data

Course is open to anyone. No restrictions in the number of participants. Useful also for PhD students who need statistical methods in their research.
