Learning outcomes 

After acting as peer tutors for the International Master's Degree Programmes, the student

1. will be prepared for interaction with students from a different cultural background
2. can provide information on courses taught in English and on the practices of university studies in Fin-land
3. is able to help foreign students function in Finnish society
4. understands their responsibilities and role as a peer tutor for master’s students

 
Content 

A tutor's role is to assist new students in matters related to study practices and in gaining familiarity with academic life. Tutors provide support for new students. Peer tutoring is aimed at facilitating the orientation of new students in the academic community, at providing them with basic information on university-level studies, and at getting them started in their studies. However, peer tutors are not responsible for study guidance.

 
Modes of study 

Planning and preparation of peer tutoring. Acting as a peer tutor. Drafting a tutoring report. The role of peer tutor of students on an International Master’s Degree Programme requires a good command of English and the ability to assist students in other ways, including practical matters such as banking, shopping and seeking accommodation upon arrival in Finland.

 
Teaching methods 

Cooperation with the master's degree programme and International Mobility Services in providing initial guidance for new students. Communicating with the students and providing guidance before, during and after their arrival. Reading the learning material for tutors and planning, preparing and carrying out tutoring (52 h, including a number of tutoring sessions according to need); drafting of a tutoring report (2 h). Cooperation with other international tutors.

Evaluation criteria 

To pass, the student must act as a peer tutor and complete a tutoring report. Pass/fail.
