Content 

The course discusses the issues of formation of Russian identity through visual media: arts, architecture, representations of Russia at world fairs and in museum expositions. Students will learn about the strategies of representation of Russianness throughout the imperial period and the lives of these representations in Soviet and contemporary Russia. The course consists of 16 hours of lectures.

 

Lecture topics include:

Making the Russian Visible in 18th Century Russia;

Searching for a National Style in Art and Architecture in the Late 19th Century;

Exhibiting Russianness to a Global Audience: Russia at World Fairs;

Narratives of Russianness in Museum Space;

The Invention of Russian Landscape;

Russian Realisms: the Myth of the Peredvizhniki;

Modernism, Archaism and the End of Empire;

How Russian Was Russian Avant-garde?
