Learning outcomes 

Students are able to apply the concepts of linguistic morphology and syntax to language analysis.


Significance and function of morphology and syntax, their relationship to other language modules, history of linguistic morphology and syntax, basic terminology, fundamentals of morphological analysis, morphological theories and models (e.g. WP, IA, IP, two-level morphology, natural morphology), typology and universals of morphology, syntactic functions and semantic/thematic roles, fundamentals of syntactic analysis (e.g. IC analysis, generative grammar's standard model, government and binding theory).

Modes of study 

Lectures 10 h, literature and exercises 42 h, exam 2 h.

Teaching methods 

Reading, submission of assignments, (non-compulsory) participation in lectures.

Study materials 

Course readings will be selected in class.

Book examination option: e.g., Katamba: Morphology and Tallerman: Understanding Syntax.
