Learning outcomes 

Students know and understand the basic phonetic and phonological terminology as well as the key research areas. They are also able to independently conduct simple phonological analyses.


Fundamentals of articulatory, auditory and acoustic phonetics; basic phonological terminology, phonological features, phonological rules, optimality theory.

Modes of study 

Lectures 10 h, literature and exercises 42 h, exam 2 h.

Teaching methods 

Reading, submission of assignments, (non-compulsory) participation in lectures.

Study materials 

Ashby & Maidment: Introducing Phonetic Science, Hayes: Introductory Phonology (or equivalent text-books)
