Description
Learning outcomes 

The course provides key information on the principles, methods and practical applications of pharmaco- and toxicogenomics

 
Content 

Topics include the development and definitions of pharmacogenomics, pharmacogenetics of drug metabolizing enzymes and drug targets, the principles of main pharmacogenomic methods and their use in various stages of drug development and important experimental settings and regulatory guidances.

 
Modes of study 

Written exam, questions can be answered wither in Finnish or in English.

Practical exercises, project work and Moodle quizzes.

 
Teaching methods 

Lectures (21 h), group work (12 h), final exam (4 h), independent study including Moodle exercises (44 h). Lectures and lecture materials in English. If no English-speaking students attend, then lectures in Finnish. Group teaching in Finnish when applicable.

 
Study materials 

Pharmacogenetics and Individualized Therapy (2012). Maitland-van der Zee & Daly (eds.) or Pharmacogenomics (2013) Lam & Cavallari (eds.). Both E-books available in UEF library.

Lecture handouts, practical work instructions, review articles provided in Moodle and relevant databases.

 
Evaluation criteria 

Final exam 50 %, group work report 30 %, Moodle exercises 20 %. Final exam has to be passed (25/50 points).

Prerequisites 

Basic courses in molecular biology and genetics is essential: Biochemistry in Pharmacy and Molecular Biology & Genetics in Pharmacy (or similar course) are required. Exchange students should inquire before registration and provide a study transcript and description of relevant prior courses. DMPK or similar course is highly recommended.
