Learning outcomes 

The student understands the principles and key technologies of bio-refining of bio-based raw materials and understands the basics of industrial biotechnology and key applications in the production of bio-based chemicals, transportation fuels, bio-polymers, pharmaceuticals and other bio-based products. The student also understands the material and energy flows in bio-based industrial processes. The student gains an understanding of the basics of profitability of investments in modern bio-based industry and have the methodological skills to study the ability of bio-based industry to pay of raw material. 


Biorefining principles and technologies on biomass fractioning, liquefaction of wood, thermal gasification and chemical processes of lignocellulosic and other bio-based feedstock. Material and energy flow in the biomass refining processes. Principles and technologies in industrial biotechnology with modern applications in bio-based industry. Utilising enzymes, microbes and fungi in modern bio-based production in the sectors of food and feed industry, paper and pulp production, pharmaceutical and medicinal industry and textile and energy sector. Economical framework for viable biorefining and industrial biotechnological concepts. Basics on cell factories and utilising microbes in further modification and fabrication of bio-based products and compounds. 

Modes of study 

Lectures (18 h), large individual or group work based on industrial case concept. Work and reports are presented in a seminar. Putative excursions. The final evaluation is based on the learning portfolio.
