Description
Learning outcomes 

After completing the course, the student knows the basis of bioeconomy from a number of viewpoints and understands the thematic structures of global bioeconomy and forest-based bioeconomy.

 

 
Content 

What is Bioeconomy and Forest-based bioeconomy, Finnish wood reserves and national bioeconomy strategies, European bioeconomy strategies, raw-material driven bioeconomics, concept of biorefining, relevant sustainability and environmental issues, land use, food issues, biomass reserve governance, wood building, various end uses – energy, chemicals or materials – and the concept of increased value by refining, other uses of forests and the basics of the economics in bioeconomy. 

 
Modes of study 

Introduction lecture and e-learning from Moodle web page (2 h). Learning diary (40 h) and long written essay (58 h) which the student much upload to Moodle for review. The time for the essay preparation is given and limited but all the course material and other open access information sources can be utilized, as long as appropriate citation rules are applied.

Available in Moodle, registration key will be provided during the first lecture.

 

 
Evaluation criteria 

0-5 (0 = fail, 5 = excellent).

The evaluation is based on learning diary (50%) and long written essay (50%). Submission of unsatisfactory learning diary or essay, i.e. failure to meet the criteria set in the guidelines, will result to grade "fail".

Every year, introduction lecture is given every autumn semester in period I and in spring semester period III, the rest of the course can be completed at one’s own pace during the academic year.
