Learning outcomes 

The student can handle informal communication in studies and working life, as well as in some formal situations. They understand formal communication
and can identify the characteristics of various registers. The student can give presentations on topics related to their discipline and academic interests.
The student understands the content of social discussions frequently discussed in the media, such as those on employment, health and the environment.

• characteristics of Finnish negotiations
• debating and expressing opinions
• relevant genres, such as cover letters
• idiomatic expressions

Modes of study 

Participating in instruction and completing course assignments and exercises. The minimum attendance requirement for contact teaching is 50%.
Attendance of the first session is required to secure a place on the course. Course-specific, practical arrangements are agreed during the first session.

Teaching methods 

Lectures, spoken and written pair and group exercises and independent study, for example. You should reserve 108 hours of total working time for the course.
The maximum number of contact teaching hours is 48, some of which may be arranged in another manner agreed by the teacher and class.

Evaluation: 5–0.

Active participation in group instruction (at least 50% attendance), completing course assignments, final exam and possible midterm exam. The course grade (5-0)
is based on both continuous evaluation and course assignment and exam grades. The minimum score required to pass the final exam is 65% of the maximum total score.


Course Finnish 3 completed with approval or equivalent skills, Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) skill level A2.2.
