Description
Learning outcomes

1) To develop a broad view on drug absorption, distribution and elimination, 2) To learn the basic principles in clinical pharmacokinetics, i.e., in the optimization of drug therapy for an individual patient.

Content

Scientific competence:  1) Role of pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) studies in drug development, 2) Description of pharmacokinetic events with mathematical models, 3) Utilization of models in clinical pharmacokinetics, i.e. in the optimization of drug therapy for an individual patient.

Professional competence: Solving pharmacokinetic patient cases with both basic calculations and mathematical simulation models.

Modes of study

Calculation and modeling exercises need to be solved alone or in pairs. A learning diary needs to prepared on at least two chapters of the textbook alone or in a group. No final exam.

Teaching methods

Lectures 12 h, tutorials in computer class 21 h, independent study 21 h.

Study materials

Clinical Pharmacokinetics, edited by John E. Murphy (6th edition; available as an electronic book).

Lecture notes. Calculation workbook.

Evaluation criteria

Accepted-failed principle. The calculation exercises need to be solved correctly and the learning diary prepared in a predefined format.
