Learning outcomes 

To get familiar with essential pharmacology.


Basic principles of pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and drug biotransformation. Autonomic pharmacology. Cardiovascular-renal drugs, emphasis on antihypertensives, drugs for coronary heart disease, and heart failure. Drugs with important actions on smooth muscle, emphasis on histamine, serotonin, eicosanoids, asthma. Main classes of drugs for gastrointestinal disorders. CNS drugs, emphasis on sedative-hypnotics, opioid analgesics, antidepressants, antipsychotics, and major classes of neurological drugs. Drugs used to treat diseases of the blood and inflammation, emphasis on antithrombotic drugs, dyslipidemia drugs, NSAIDs, and  DMADRs. Endocrine drugs, emphasis on adrenocorticosteroids, gonadal hormones (estrogens and progestins), antidiabetic drugs, and osteoporosis drugs. Chemotherapeutic drugs, emphasis on main antibacterials, antivirals and antifungals. Basics on cancer chemotherapeutics and immunopharmacology. Basics of toxicology, clinical toxicology and drug interactions.

Modes of study 

Participation in teaching (4 ECTS), final examination (8 ECTS).

Teaching methods 

The course is organized as seminars. The students are expected to prepare themselves for the seminars by reading the textbook. In the seminar the pre-specified areas will be discussed. The active contribution of each student is required in the seminars. A written examination is made at the end of the course.

Textbook: Katzung, Masters, Trevor: Basic & Clinical Pharmacology, McGraw-Hill; other material distributed during the course.

Evaluation criteria 

0 (Fail) - 5 (Excellent). Evaluation criteria is given at the beginning of the course.
