Learning outcomes 

- Student can work in the synthesis laboratory in accordance with the special working safety

- Student can use synthesis techniques, including basic, modern and special attention requiring techniques

- Student can plan and perform independently a reaction step and reaction route according to the literature procedure

- Student can isolate, purify and analyze the produced final product

- Student can document the work into the laboratory notebook according to the research principles

- Student can consider and exploit the principles of green chemistry whenever possible in the laboratory work

 
Content 

Modern synthesis methods and synthesis routes containing several synthesis steps. Product characterization with NMR spectroscopy. 

 
Modes of study 

Practical laboratory exercises 80 h, independent preparation for the exercises, familiarization with theory (Moodle exercises) and preparation of the project work presentation total 55 h, presentation of the project works 2 h.

 
Teaching methods 

Before the laboratory exercises, students complete Moodle pre-exercises. Students work as pairs in the laboratory. First, students perform synthesis exercises during which they get to know the laboratory and methodology. After that, each pair gets a project work of their own. In the project work, the pair synthesizes an end product via several synthesis steps and, at the end of the course, present the project work for the other students.

Evaluation criteria 

Pass / Fail

Minimum criteria for passing are accepted orientation quiz (Moodle, min. 7 of 10 points), reaction plans for exercises (Moodle), performance of exercises (laboratory notebook, 100% presence), performance of project work (laboratory notebook, 100% presence) and presentation of the project work for other students.

Previous theoretical studies and practical exercises in the organic chemistry (for example Organic chemistry and Organic chemistry 2).

The number of participants is limited to 10-12 students, pharmacy students having priority. There should be minimum 6 participants in order for the course to be organized.

Course includes elements of sustainable development (Environmental protection, waste management)
